Module 2 - Writing Techniques & the W's

Once you have decided upon your idea for your story, as a writer you must consider how you wish to start your story, and then of course, how you must present your story.

We have a few tips for you. In this module, we introduce :

* Writing Parts-of-Speech {Verbs, Nouns, Adverbs, Adjectives etc}

* The W's {Why, When, What, Where, How and Who's}

Let's briefly start with Writing 'Parts-of-Speech'. Please see my overview.

This will help you remember what each of the 'parts of speech' are.

In the next module, we will apply these in sentence form.

We shall continue here with the W's.

These are really helpful when creating your story 'Idea's'.

When starting your story, always think about your reader.

Yes! YOU are the Author, however, it starts to become less about you, and more about your reader. You craft your story for someone to read.

One way you can do this, is through the W's. If you ask yourself W questions, and then Answer them, you will be amazed at how much detail you create.

Let's practice using your notebook...

WHAT?     What is your story about? What is the problem?

                 What is the main theme of your story?

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a What Question? and an ANSWER!

                                    relating to your new story idea - (or just a topic).

WHERE? Now that you have a WHAT! Consider a WHERE.

                 Where is your story set?

                (The setting is important for future descriptions and scene setting)

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a Where Question? and an ANSWER!

WHO?

                 Who is in your story? Who is the story about?

                (The setting is important for future descriptions and scene setting)

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a Who Question? and an ANSWER!

WHEN?

                 When is your story set? (Is it in the future, in the past)?

                (This may not always be important to 'write' in your story,

              however, it is good to think about it so that you can build more detail)

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a When Question? and an ANSWER!

WHY?

                 Why is ...... this will apply specifically to your story.

                 You may not have enough details yet to answer this one, however, it           is good to keep it in your mind because it will give more details once                 you are building your story)

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a Why Question? and an ANSWER!

HOW?

               How is ......again , this will apply specifically to your story.

            You may not have enough details yet to answer this one, however, it                  is good to keep it in your mind because it will give more details once                 you are building your story)

    YOUR Challenge?   Write down a How Question? and an ANSWER!

With each of these W's, please jot down as much detail that you can think of.
